Vincent Laforet – ‘Laforet Air’ Broken Down

Vincent Laforet is at the top of my list for my personal favorite photographers. I had the opportunity to meet him last year at PhotoExpo 2014 where he broke down step-by-step a commercial video production he did for Nike. What makes Vincent such a great speaker is he has no apprehension in explaining the most intimate details of each step of his processes. In other words, he’s not intimated someone is going to take his knowledge and rip him off.
Fast forward today, I had another great opportunity to sit in front of Vincent as he broke down his latest visual sensation, “Laforet Air”. In this series he utilized a Canon 5DS and 1DX in photos captured from a helicopter over New York City. Unlike a standard helicopter picture of New York City, this was done at night and done above 10,000 feet, hanging from a harness out the side of a helicopter.
I’ve been following his twitter and Instagram where he has given previews of some of these shots, but this was a great opportunity where he really broke down how the shots were composed, which lenses were used, and his minimal post-processing workflow in Lightroom.

It seems he took with him nearly every prime lens that Canon produces. He also explained his only post-processing in these photos is a touch of vibrance boost, a touch of clarity, and exposure adjustment. He shot everything in manual mode and ignored white balance, as when shooting with RAW it can be set in post.
The cameras ability to capture such widely varying temperatures (sodium lights, LED lights, and everything in between) is astonishing. I strongly encourage you take a moment to flip over to Vincent’s website and view his work if you haven’t already.
The best news is that after shooting New York City, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Madrid, London, and Sydney he is putting the pictures together in a collection for a new book he has coming out this fall. The pictures we got to preview were absolutely stunning and I’m certain this book will be a ‘must-have’ once it’s released.
